Anesthesia coding

Anesthesia coding refers to the assignment of ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) CPT codes and qualifying circumstance codes for anesthesia services administered during surgical, obstetric, or diagnostic procedures. Unlike most specialties, anesthesia reimbursement is calculated using base units plus time units multiplied by a payer-specific conversion factor, making accurate code assignment and precise time documentation critical for correct payment. Because of this complexity, anesthesia coding benefits significantly from technology that can interpret anesthesia records and operative documentation to produce accurate, compliant codes consistently.
